Here at Guy Wakeling Jewellery we are fanatical about every aspect of jewellery, and our jewellery cleaning and repair services are no exception. Have a read of this blog to see how you can clean your jewellery yourself and why, sometimes, it is better to leave it to us.

Why Clean Your Jewellery

Jewellery is a truly emotive object. It can be a reward for your hard work and sacrifices, a reminder that you are treasured, or a memento of a loved one.

For millennia, people have been adorning themselves in beautiful jewellery for these reasons. Anyone who has ever owned a piece they truly care about will be familiar with that fluttery feeling of pride and emotion you get when you first wear your piece, whether it be a promise of things to come in a sparkly engagement ring, or a pair of earrings that belonged to someone special. Or even, the comforting and familiar weight of your wedding ring enveloping your finger.

But over time the sheen can wear off and things can start to look a little dull.

Not only that, but on your rings in particular, dirt and oil can build up around the stones and can dislodge or discolour them.

Just think-you wash your hands throughout the day, and care for your nails, but do you ever care for your rings?

Keeping your jewellery looking clean is important in maintaining the sparkle of excitement or love you feel when you look at it, which is why our jewellery cleaning services are so useful.

Cleaning Jewellery at Home

So, you have decided your rings need cleaning. They don’t look shiny anymore and you are fairly certain there is a colony of germs living around the claws.

Do you risk cleaning them yourself and damaging them? Or do you take them to a proper jeweller and get some freebee services thrown in?Jewellery Cleaning, Jewellery Cleaning Services, 1 Hour Jewellery Cleaning, Jewellery Cleaning Offers, Ring Cleaning Service, Rhodium Replating, Rhodium Re-Plating, Silver Jewellery Cleaning, Gold Jewellery Cleaning, Diamond Jewellery Cleaning, White Gold Replating, White Gold Re-Plating, White Gold Cleaning

Well of course-you leave it to the professionals! Our jewellery cleaning services covers cleaning your stones, polishing the metal or re-plating, and checking the stone security.

But if you did want to clean your jewellery at home, there are a million different hacks that can get your

jewellery sparkling. White vinegar, baking soda, cola, and even ammonia are all touted as the best products to keep your jewellery looking tip top. But be careful with porous stones and jewellery with loose fittings. And don’t forget, gold, platinum, and silver are all different types of metal so react differently to different processes and chemicals.

To be honest, just the thought of cleaning jewellery at home is making us feel nervous, so let’s have a look at how we do it here.

Our jewellery cleaning service is thorough, because making sure your jewels look their best is about more than removing the grime.

First of all, we carefully clean your stone. Diamonds may be one of the hardest substances on Earth, but they can get tarnished and dull with oils from hand creams, sweat, and even food grease. And no one wants a dull diamond.

Next, we check that all the claws and stone settings are secure and you aren’t going to lose any stones. This is so important, as over time, the claws can become less than perfect. If any of them do look slightly warped or worn, we can raise it with you and repair them before it is too late.

Next, we reshape the ring. Softer metals, such as gold, can easily get bent out of shape over time and wear. This weakens the overall ring, not to mention makes it uncomfortable and unsightly.

After that we gently remove any scratches on the surface of the metal itself and buff it to a high shine.

If you have a white gold ring, we will also Rhodium plate it for you so it looks like it did the day you bought it.

Sounds expensive, right? Wrong. Our prices start from £25.00 per item. We can even do it same day for an extra fiver.

A Word on Rhodium Plating

White gold is, as most people know, grey gold with Rhodium plating on it. Over time this layer wears off, so the gold starts to look grey again.

This can make your jewellery look dirty and aged, but all it needs is a nice recoat and it will look good as new.

Rhodium Plated diamond ringSome jewellers charge extra to put on an ‘extra thick’ layer of rhodium onto the jewellery, but this is nonsense. You can’t get an extra thick layer of rhodium so don’t fall for it.

Bring your white gold to us and we will re-plate it for you without any lies or cons.
